Higher gasoline prices make us smarter
Tuesday, December 02, 2008
The Windsor Star -- No sooner have we laid the whole price parity issue with the United States to rest, we now have to deal with the biggest crisis in automotive history with the Big Three literally on the verge of bankruptcy, automobile sales are at their lowest ebb in more than 25 years and a worldwide economy is veering off the track toward recession/depression/choose your economic holocaust.

My solution - I can already feel my inbox erupting - is to raise gasoline taxes. Not just a little, symbolic uptick but massive increases - huge even.

Despite loving cheap gas as much as the next person, raising the price at the pumps could minimize the U.S. dependence on foreign oil, reduce pollution and, ironically, also help save the U.S. automakers.

I'd rather pay more gas tax than see those money go to the pocket of OPEC.

Increasing taxes are never a good idea. Remember this summer when we were paying over $4.00 a gallon, did they lower or eliminate the taxes for a tax holiday? No they didn't so we shouldd have to pay more tax now that prices have gone down. We should just save our own money for next time they are back over $4.00 again.

Can someone tell me what this guy is smoking? If gas drops to and stays at $1.25 a gallon, I could see a .05 Cent tax to help build other sources of energy, but if gas were go up to $1.40 a gallon then drop the tax. that would be the only way to enact a gas tax. You know that OPEC and the Oil would never allow that to happen ( PRICES GET THAT LOW ).

As far a C hrystler goes, I hate to say it but that is what investors get. They made their profit now they want to cry. As for the others, the stockholders should have voted them out and the unions are going to have to give a little. It seems Ford is the only one that is saying they do not need help, just want a line of credit to prove they have the governments backing. So I guess in the future if we want US we will be buying Fords. Since the other companies Not US will pick up the production the jobs will go to them. Conservation keeps your money in your pocket.

Raising taxes is only a viable solution if our politicians were to put this money to good use. Few if any educated people in both Canada and the United States have not witnessed both of our countries waste valuable tax dollars. The main problem is that what one person sees as good economic spending of our tax dollars is viewed by another as a waste of our tax dollars. Can we really expect our politicians to know the difference?

Raising taxes is never the answer. Government needs to quit this tax and spend routine. Especially when they are spending trillions more than they bring in.

I say let Canada and Mexico bailout the auto manufacturers since almost every part that makes up an "American" automobile is manufactured in one of those countries. It's not the US auto workers that would be most affected by a GM, Ford, and Chrysler bankruptcy.

This author is just plain NUTS! I totally disagree with his logic. As to the automakers, they couldn't see past their noses, pushing the gas-guzzlers on the public. All for the sake of the almighty dollar. They dug their own hole, let them wise-up and find their own solutions. Start by getting rid of the overpaid CEOs. You can bet they are having steak dinners every night.

Taxes high enough. The oil companies arent hurting for money, just look at the record profits they are all posting. Maybe it is making some a little smarter in how they live, but for alot of people it hurts them no matter what because they are living on a budget that is hard to budge.

The only way I could see a slight raise in the gas tax would be if they got rid of the toll booths on the TPike and the GSP in NJ. Those things stink and the tolls just went up yesterday. People are pissed, me too.

raise the taxes? are you nuts? uh huh. that will solve it. which then means people will buy less gas because they can't afford it like when it was $4 a gallon. give me a break.

The big 3 have seen this coming since the ''gas crisis' of the early-mid 70's. And yet did not produce reliable, quality, economic passenger vehicles but put there effort in Suv's and Large Pickups.

I live in a rural area about 15 miles out of town, with many of my neighbors working in the 'city'.

In the am and pm commute, it is amazing as to the number of 4x4's that are "Road Queens" and have never [nor will they ever] see mud and dirt, much less work. And we do not have that much snow. It is all show.

End all the silly regulations and the Big Three will be just fine. Then send each of us a million smackers and I bet the American people will end all of the Crisis and spend our way back to prosperity.

I would agree to this: Tax the guzzlers by the pound and engine size. Their heavy weight is what ruins roads. Tax exempt EVs.

If you want to reduce pollution get rid of those darn coal fired electrical plants, that's where the problem is. Now is the time for nuclear power not oil or coal.

gas here today was 79.9 cents a liter. 79.9 cents/liter x 3.78 l/gallon = $3.02 / gallon. some of that diffreence is diffrence in the dollar but a lot of that is tax. We did hit $1.38 / liter at the peak on the long weekend in september.

goodbuy,

You object to purchase dollars going abroad, but you don't object that the US sends $600 million each day (at $50 per bbl) to foreign oil suppliers. I call those people pseudo-patriots. (Yes enhanced domestic drilling could reduce this temporarily to $570,000 if consumption patterns stayed the same)

We all make lifestyle choices and these should be generally steered, but cannot be managed in detail because different people have different priorities. Or, in absence of political steering, the economy will adjust itself, like the gasoline prices last summer.

Count yourself lucky that you were in a situation sending that much gas money into your tank. There are less fortunate individuals who could no longer afford to do so.

Another socialist moron for an author. Raise taxes for the public good. What about the poor guy striving to make ends meet?, the independent trucker trying to make a living. The government won't give back to them, just some bs make work program or bailout for a business that should have known better. Chrysler has already gotten a loan once (& luckily paid it back) but did they learn anything? NO. Let them all go chapter 11 and be re-organized by the courts. That will create a balanced labor force with that of the foriegn automakers and allow the domestic automakers to create a profit. The big 3 produce vehicles that are similar to the foriegn makers at about the same price (otherwise thay couldn't sell the vehicle) and can't make money on it due to the labor costs. They are looking to the future to create vehicles that conserve our resources. Will we buy them?

Boy am I glad this guy lives in Canada... Least I think he lives there. Bankruptcy might be the best idea for the auto makers. If they really need to come out a slimmer industry. Whats wrong with them paying a good wage for the labor. Believe its the health care costs thats messing them up.

Make any tax revocable once prices it a certain price point say 3.50/gallon.This way we can take advantage fo the break now and invest in roads and alternate energy while promoting some conservation. My guess is that a 35 cent gas tax would be palatable and still leave pries around 2.50 gallon.
